A quick entry with some Jay Reatard projects.
1. I downloaded some mp3s from
The Reatards a long time ago and never really got into them, but for one reason or another, I bought
Bedroom Disasters, a kind of Goner-years Reatards comp from Empty Records, and I really really dug it. Snotty as fuck way way low-fi garagey punk; Jay Reatard's been at it for years, signing with Goner when he was only 17, I believe. Some of his earlier songs like "Teenage Hate" are probably his best and this is what this record encapsulates.

Angry Angles are Jay Reatard's latest project with Alix of The Lids. Still punk but by far not as snotty and as garage as The Reatards stuff. Very art punk and extremely new-wave. The title track off their 7",
Apparent Transparent is one of those songs you can't seem to get out of your head. It was kinda annoying at first but it grows on you... in a good way. The song seems out of place on the single though; the other two songs on this 7" are far less energetic and dancey. "You Fell In" is often described as very Urinals-esque (which it is - it's pretty minimalist) and "The 15th" is a Wire cover, which I must say is a good cover even though I'm not particularly a big fan of the original. Those two songs are pretty melancholy tunes and not usually like the kinda stuff I listen to but they've got a very appealing and lovely haunting sound.
 | From the Apparent Transpart 7" (Plastic Idol, 2006) Apparent Transparent You Fell In The 15th (Wire Cover)
NOT available from Plastic Idol Records cos it's sold out! But Plastic Idol does have some other great releases worth checkin' out, particularly from The Heartattacks (Sweden), The Anxieties, The Minds & Anteteenagers MC! |
Angry Angles on MyspaceI know I'm skipping Jay Reatard's other project,
The Lost Sounds, but I actually don't have any of their stuff so sorry folks.
3. Jay Reatard also runs a record label, Shattered Records, which is probably why I am actually using him as a "theme". The
Knaughty Knights happen to be have issued their latest 7" on that label (perhaps because drummer Rich Crook is ex-Lost Sounds) and I'm really digging it at the moment. Lo-fi punk that's 100% pop! Sounds weird, I know but it definitely works and it's outstanding. I think this is even better than the
Marked Men stuff, and we all know that shit is great!
