The Mods (Canada)

I was kinda disappointed because when I bought The Mods' album, Twenty 2 Months today, I thought they were The Mods from Mods Mayday.

Unfortunately those Mods are from the UK while these are from Toronto. These guys ain't half bad though. Even though the singer's voice gets kinda annoying, the album's got some pretty good cuts. Canada's Mods gained substantial popularity in the late 70s and early 80s, opening up for bands like The Police and The Specials and also touring with one of Canada's best punk bands, Teenage Head.

Here are a couple of tracks from Twenty 2 Months, which was actually recorded in the late 70's but only produced and released in 1995. I actually hate the Mods' only single (and release) "Step Out Tonight" (which is also included on this album), but there are a lot of much better songs on this album.

Twenty 2 Months
1995 Other People's Music
*Coming Out of the Rain
*Anywhere But With You
*Out of Your Hands

They remind me of The Jam a lot of the time.

Twenty 2 Months is available from Other People's Music.

Mind Controls

Ahhh, the Mind Controls - yet another brilliant Mark Sultan project. Faster than King Khan & BBQ but more soulful than Les Sexareenos, this one is a great blend of Sultan's multiple projects, all of which simply scream rock 'n' roll.

Mind Controls S/T
2006 Dirtnap/P.Trash
*Take A Message
*Prelude to a Fight
*Bite Your Tongue

They get a lot of Lurkers comparisons, which I can also see.

The Mind Controls' S/T is avaialable from Dirtnap (US) and P.Trash (UK/Euro), two labels which seem to continually have amazing releases.

I made a new banner for Pure Mania, check it out:

If you wanna link to Pure Mania! using a banner, copy & paste this code:

<center><a href="http://www.pure-mania.net"><img src="http://www.annabananarchy.com/rock/imgs/PMBANNER.gif"></a></center>

Also, I'm trying to figure out a way to do rotating banners on a site (not because I wanna get money from advertising, but because I want to advertise YOU), so if you have a banner, feel free to email me at puremaniablog@gmail.com and we'll work something out! Max banner size is 600 x 100.

Modernettes

I know I've posted them before, but I've been listening to them too much lately so here's a couple of tracks from this Canadian mod-revival band. These are taken from their second EP, "View from the Bottom", which was included in a great Modernettes comp from Sudden Death entitled Get It Straight.

From View From the Bottom EP (Vox 1982):
Rebel Kind
Femme Fatale
Red Nails
I Can Only Give You Everything
Static

To tell you the truth, I prefer their Teen City EP; it's a bit more mod-revival w hile this one is sort of new-wave (and the song "Barbra" is a classic!) but I posted that before, so why not give you guys some new material?

Get It Straight is available from Sudden Death Records.

The Modernettes seem to be regrouping, unfortunately for me it's all on the West Coast! They play March 9th at the Funhouse in Seattle, WA.

The Pagans

The Pagans are one of Cleveland's best punk bands in my opinion, right up there with the Dead Boys, who they share some musical similarities with.

The band actually broke up in 1979, but reunited several times thereafter. This 7" was released during one of those times (1988) but is actually a cut from some of their unreleased material recorded in 1977-1979.

You can and should buy Shit Street from Crypt Records.

The Briefs - C'mon Squash Me Like A Bug 7"

Do I really have to introduce The Briefs? Well they're a goofy '77-influenced punk band from Seattle, WA.

Their best release (in my opinion) is this 7" off Sub Pop, with the exception of their Joy of Killing EP in which they do 5 covers all to do with killing (e.g. The Damned's "Born to Kill").

C'mon Squash Me Like a Bug
b/w Benny's Got a Cigarette
2001 Subpop

*C'mon Squash Me Like A Bug

I'm not sure if that release is even available any more except off eBay.
