Gorilla Angreb
Discography by Denmark's Gorilla Angreb was a complete impulse buy. I'd never heard them before I picked up the record at Generation; one of my friends who likes awesome music really digs them, so I thought, "why the hell not?" I put it on at work the next day and the first thing that comes to mind is X. Then I think, "nah, X Ray Spex". My coworker puts on The Avengers right after the record's done and that, my dear friends, pretty much sums up Gorilla Angreb. Unlike The Avengers, X or the X Ray Spex though, Gorilla Angreb were a current band (formed in 1999), even though their sound first had me guessing they from the '70s or '80s. I say were a current band though, as they broke up only a couple of months ago. What a shame, as I hear they're a terrific live band! Not sure what other projects members of Gorilla Angreb are up to right now, but Simon (bass) is also in Los Retardos. Discography and other Gorilla Angreb merch are available from the Los Retardos site. Look for the links at the bottom! CBGB Founder, Hilly Kristal Dies at Age 75
NEW YORK, Aug. 29 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- It is with deep sadness and regret that we inform you of the death of Hilly Kristal, who died on Tuesday, August 28, 2007 from complications from Lung Cancer. Kristal, 75, founded the legendary rock club CBGB and ran the club for 33 years. A singer and songwriter himself, Kristal opened the club to showcase "Country Bluegrass and Blues"; instead the club became a breeding ground for Punk rock. Among the many acts that called CBGB home were Blondie, the Talking Heads, Television, Living Color, Patti Smith and the Ramones. The club closed in October 2006, but CBGB continues, with a retail store in New York City and worldwide merchandise sales; in addition, there currently are plans to open new CBGB clubs in several locations.
Kristal is survived by his daughter, Lisa Kristal Burgman, son, Mark Dana Kristal, son-in-law Ger Burgman, grandchildren Jenny and Adam Burgman, CBGB, and the thousands of artists and musicians who played the club.
A private memorial service is planned. A public memorial will be held at a later date. Contributions in Hilly's honor may be made in his name to the American Cancer Society or to the Hilly Kristal Foundation for Musicians and Artists (168 Second Avenue, PMB 207, New York, NY 10003).

Zero Boys
The finest LA hardcore punk ironically comes from the midwest - the Zero Boys from Indianapolis, IN. If you like The Germs, you'll like this - fuck it, these guys are better than The Germs! Fast, mean, socially and politically charged punk. Here are a couple tracks off their classic LP, Vicious Circle (1982), available as a 2000 re-issue on Lookout!/Panic Button Records with 2 bonus tracks. I have no idea why these guys are not more well known. Seriously. They stand on the same level as punk/hardcore legends like Black Flag, Dead Kennedys and Bad Brains. Available on Lookout! Records. V/A - Cleveland Confidential
Oh man, it's been a while, huh? I'm not gonna make any promises about trying harder to update this since that always seems to fall through. Anyways here's a little something for you kids from the compilation, Cleveland Confidential. When most people think of the 70s Cleveland scene they think Dead Boys or Pere Ubu, however there were a lot of brilliant bands from the area that never got the recognition they deserved. Cleveland Confidential is a great introduction these bands, who range from to punk (Pagans) to art punk (Styrenes) to power pop (Clocks). Too bad this CD doesn't seem to be too readily available. I believe it's released on CD by English label Overground Records. It's actually a digitised version of material from both an EP and LP of the same title; both were produced by Mike Hudson of The Pagans. I'm not gonna lie, sometimes the sound on here isn't too great, especially since a lot of the material seems to be recorded live, but it's got some killer songs and that's all that matters, huh? LiveFastDie
LiveFastDie are one of my new favorite bands in New York. Stripped down punk with influences like The Jabbers and GG Allin (their name an obvious reference to one of GG's many shitty tattoos), LiveFastDie are down and dirty lo-fi primitive rock 'n' roll (could I add any more adjectives there?). The production of their releases is shitty at best, which gives them more of their sleazy charm. And they're fuckin' hilarious to boot, with songs titles such as "Fat Guy with an Ipod" and "Art is Faggotry". What more could you ask for?
Bandana Thrash Record is available from Dead Beat Records. Pissing On The Mainframe 7" is available from Douchemaster Records. LiveFastDie on MyspaceLabels: LiveFastDie, NYC, punk, rock 'n' roll, trash, USA
Mind Controls
Ahhh, the Mind Controls - yet another brilliant Mark Sultan project. Faster than King Khan & BBQ but more soulful than Les Sexareenos, this one is a great blend of Sultan's multiple projects, all of which simply scream rock 'n' roll. They get a lot of Lurkers comparisons, which I can also see. The Mind Controls' S/T is avaialable from Dirtnap (US) and P.Trash (UK/Euro), two labels which seem to continually have amazing releases. Labels: 2006, Canada, Mark Sultan, punk, rock 'n' roll
The Pagans
The Pagans are one of Cleveland's best punk bands in my opinion, right up there with the Dead Boys, who they share some musical similarities with. The band actually broke up in 1979, but reunited several times thereafter. This 7" was released during one of those times (1988) but is actually a cut from some of their unreleased material recorded in 1977-1979. You can and should buy Shit Street from Crypt Records. More Pagans 7":Street Where Nobody Lives 7" on 7inchpunkDead End America 7" on KBD RecordsYou can find extensive information on The Pagans at Mike Hudson's Pagans page here. Labels: 1988, Cleveland, Pagans, punk, USA
The Briefs - C'mon Squash Me Like A Bug 7"
Do I really have to introduce The Briefs? Well they're a goofy '77-influenced punk band from Seattle, WA. Their best release (in my opinion) is this 7" off Sub Pop, with the exception of their Joy of Killing EP in which they do 5 covers all to do with killing (e.g. The Damned's "Born to Kill"). I'm not sure if that release is even available any more except off eBay. The Briefs Official SiteThe Briefs on MyspaceLabels: punk, Seattle, The Briefs, USA
